We are very sorry to announce that it was just brought to our knowledge that the poster design we bought from a freelance graphic designer for the 2018 edition of the Open Out festival was a plagiarized design. The original design was created by studio fnt and illustrator Jee-ook Choi for the 20th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in 2016. We were not aware that the design had been copied, otherwise we would never have bought it.
That freelance designer came up with a poster which she presented as her original work, designed specifically for our festival. We only learned about the fact that it was in fact a copy of a previous design a few days ago, when some Korean Tumblr users rightfully pointed it out to us. We immediately removed all pictures of the poster from our social media accounts and webpage. We will of course never work with that person again.
We sincerely apologize to the original designer and designing team at BIFAN whose artwork was used without permission. We had no knowledge that the design we bought was a plagiarized design.
We are a small, non-profit festival run by volunteers, and all the festival events were free of charge; we have not made any profit from the festival.
Stealing someone else’s artwork or design is ethically unacceptable, unlawful, but also rude and pathetic.
